Fire Damages 10-Unit Endicott Apartment Building
Several people are homeless after a two-alarm fire caused considerable damage to a residential structure in Endicott.
The blaze at 106 South Nanticoke Avenue was reported around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday. The fire scene is about one block south of the Cider Mill.
The first police officer to arrive reported there was an active fire. The blaze started on a front porch of the two-and-a-half story wood frame apartment house.
Cameron Wood, who said he maintained the property for its owner, said he believed all 10 apartments in the building were occupied at the time of the fire.
Endicott fire marshal Brian Botsford told WNBF News no injuries were reported. He said the fire spread from the porch to the roof of the building.
A block of Nanticoke Avenue between Main and Union streets was closed while firefighters battled the blaze. Fire units were on the scene for just over two hours.
Most of those who were forced out of the building by the fire were adults, although one young boy also was left homeless as a result of the blaze. The Red Cross was called to help the displaced residents.
A pet cat which had been reported missing later was found unharmed.
Botsford said the cause of the fire was under investigation.
The apartment house is owned by JSB Management Group LLC of Manalapan, New Jersey.
