Village of Endicott Drills for Water Near Former IBM Country Club

An urgent quest for more drinking water for Endicott and other town of Union residents has led to sites around the old IBM Country Club.

A drilling team from western New York has been working in recent days to find a potential location for a well that would supply the system operated by the village.

Kevin Pero, chief operator for the Endicott Water Department, said the village has been "looking all over" the region for a suitable spot for a new well.

Workers from Frey Well Drilling of Erie County have been busy in the area of the former country club. They've been drilling test wells on both sides of Watson Boulevard.

A crew was drilling Tuesday in a field near a parking lot a short distance east of the old country club's swimming pools.

Geological studies and water tests will be conducted in coming weeks to assess the possible sites for a new well.

Pero said water for the Endicott system now comes primarily from the Ranney well near the En Joie Golf Course. He said the village uses an average of four to five million gallons of water a day. A small amount of that is purchased from the village of Johnson City.

Endicott Mayor Linda Jackson said "we desperately need" another well to supply the system. She said the village has received about $4.3 million in state funding to develop a new well and the town of Union has pledged $1 million for the project.

Pero said the total cost of the new well is expected to exceed $7 million.
