Authorities say 19-year-old Gregory Persaud of Morris Plains, New Jersey, died Saturday afternoon.

According to state police, Persaud lost control of a vehicle on I-81 in the Town of Kirkwood around 2:45 p.m. Friday.

Investigators said witnesses reported the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed. The northbound car passed another vehicle on the left shoulder of the highway. The car went off the east side of I-81, rolled over and slammed into a tree.

Persaud was reported to be unresponsive when emergency responders arrived at the scene of the crash. He was taken to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City, where he died.

Northbound traffic was slowed for hours following the crash because one lane of the highway was closed during the police investigation.

People who witnessed the crash may contact state police at 607.775.1241.
