Thousands of people are expected to brave snow and ice to enjoy an almost annual competition and family event February 17.

The Almost Annual New York State Crappie Derby is officially on for February 17 on Whitney Point Lake.  In spite of temperature-swings, the ice measured 3 inches thicker than the 12 inch requirement on February 12.

The contest offers prizes based on size and species of fish, age of the angler, and other categories. Door prizes are also awarded and organizers boast prizes are given out every 15 minutes.

In addition to the contests, vendors set up on the ice and children have even enjoyed their own activities while the tournament is going on.

On-ice registration starts at 6:30 a.m. Saturday.  The derby ends at 3 p.m.
