New Court Street Apartment Complex in Downtown Binghamton
Construction of a $44 million downtown Binghamton housing project is moving forward.
The new 111-unit apartment complex is being built at the corner of Court and Stuyvestant streets.
Helio Health of Syracuse is developing the project at the site of the old Sheltered Workshop.
Workers began gutting the closed buildings last January. The site had been unused since 2011.
Much of the funding for the complex is being provided by New York state.
Most of the apartments will be in three existing buildings which are being renovated. About two-dozen units will be housed in a three-story addition that's been constructed on the south side of the complex.
The facility will have 23 studio apartments and 70 one-bedroom units. It also will have 18 two-bedroom apartments for small families.
60 apartments will be set aside for homeless veterans and for people with substance use problems.
Helio Health acquired the site for the project for more than $2.2 million in 2022.
A sign at the construction site indicates the project is expected to be completed next summer.
