Construction Starts at Future Home of BU Nursing School
Renovation work is underway in a long-unused building in Johnson City that will soon house Binghamton University's Decker School of Nursing.
Project superintendent Ivan Cote of Fahs Construction Group anticipates the job can be completed in about 14 months. He said crews started working at the Corliss Avenue site about two weeks ago.
The nursing school's new home will be in a former Endicott Johnson building that was constructed in 1916. It's located one block east of the university's pharmacy school building, which opened last summer.
Provost Donald Nieman said the new facility will be "amazing for the community and for the university."
Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program Wednesday, Nieman said old window's in the building now are being removed.
Excavation work on the east side of the structure should begin in the next month or so. That will clear the way for construction of a 20,000-square-foot addition to the existing building.
The new nursing school complex is scheduled to open in the summer of 2020.
Nieman said the new section will give the structure a new look "while at the same time preserving the historical integrity of the building."
