A Closer Look at the Vital 90-year-old Endicott-Vestal Bridge
Thousands of drivers who normally use a bridge over the Susquehanna River between Endicott and Vestal are using alternate routes this week while repair work is underway.
Workers with ZMK Construction of Apalachin are replacing a section of pavement and part of a walkway on the north side of the two-lane bridge.
A detour around the site has been in place since Monday morning. Regular traffic patterns are expected to resume Friday afternoon.
Before the bridge reopens, the span will be washed to remove salt and other corrosive material that could cause the steel to deteriorate.
The bridge has been a vital link between Vestal and the Union District of Endicott for the past nine decades.
The span, which was constructed by the American Bridge Corporation, opened for traffic in August 1935.
Some motorists heading south from Endicott into Vestal had noticed more of a "bump" on the bridge's north approach over the past couple of years.
While this week's work will address the span's most urgent issues, a comprehensive bridge rehabilitation project is scheduled for 2027.
