Body of Smyrna Teen Pulled from Chenango River near Sherburne
New York State Police are investigating the death of a Smyrna teen whose body was pulled from the Chenango River in the Village of Sherburne.
Authorities were called to the area near State Route 80 and County Route 23 just after 5 p.m. May 27 with a report of a person in the Chenango River that went underwater and had not resurfaced.
The State Police Underwater Recovery Team and divers and an air boat from the Chenango County Bureau of Fire began searching the river and surrounding area.
Searchers recovered the body of 18-year-old Nicholas Russell shortly after 8 p.m. and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
State Police say the teen had been swimming in the river with friends when he began to struggle and disappeared under the water.
