Police say a deceased man was discovered inside a vehicle that went off a roadway and wound up in a wooded area.

Authorities say the 43-year-old Windsor resident had been driving a 2005 Dodge Caravan on Old Route 17 in the town of Windsor.

Investigators determined the vehicle veered off the road and struck several mailboxes. It then went through a lawn and over Tuscarora Creek before landing in the woods.

The crash scene was found around 7:30 a.m. Thursday, about nine hours after the incident occurred.

Troopers interviewed people who lived nearby and learned one person heard a "loud noise" around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday but was not able to determine what caused it.

Another resident called 911 Wednesday morning after discovering the wrecked minivan.

Police did not release the name of the man who died. They say their investigation is continuing.

On August 9, 2018 at about 7:26 a.m., New York State Police at Binghamton were dispatched to a one fatal accident on Old Route 17 in the town of Windsor.

The crash scene is a short distance east of the Route 17 Exit 80 Damascus.

An investigation revealed that the victim, a male 43-year-old resident from Windsor was operating a 2005 Dodge Caravan when he went off the roadway for an unknown reason.  His vehicle struck several mailboxes, went through a lawn and over a creek landing in a wooded area.

Neighborhood interviews revealed that the crash occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m., when a resident heard a loud noise but was not able to see what caused it.  Another resident contacted 911 Wednesday morning when he spotted the vehicle.  When troopers arrived, the male was obviously deceased.  The investigation continues.
