BJ’s Wholesale Club to Open at Oakdale Commons in February
Construction of the building that will house a BJ's Wholesale Club store in Johnson City is moving quickly.
Workers have been busy in recent weeks at the site on the east side of the Oakdale Commons shopping complex.
The Massachusetts-based membership warehouse club operator announced last March that it intended to open the store in Johnson City.
The BJ's Wholesale Club operation will stand where The Bon-Ton store had operated at the Oakdale Mall until it closed in 2018.
Demolition of the old Bon-Ton building began in February and construction of the new structure started shortly after the site was cleared.
The new store will have about 99,000 square feet of space, nearly 20,000 square feet more than the old Bon-Ton. That store originally opened as Fowler's in October 1975.
The BJ's Wholesale Club unit in Johnson City is expected to open next February. Company officials have not announced how many people will work at the store or when they expect hiring to begin.
The new store will have a gas station with discounted fuel prices for club members.
