Binghamton’s Ross Park Zoo Opens for 146th Season
Ross Park Zoo in Binghamton is welcoming visitors for its 146th season as well as settling in a new Sand Cat and Binturong, also known as a Bearcat, and a newly hatched African penguin.
The zoo on the South Side of Binghamton has been working to grow its penguin colony and this latest hatching is the second chick to be born in Binghamton. In the upcoming weeks, officials will be announcing the gender of the chick and will hold a naming contest.
Ross Park Zoo has long been a participating facility for the Species Survival Plan and officials hope for continued success with pairing the new female Sand Cat with the male that had recently been acquired by the zoo.
Once the new female bearcat settles in, an appropriate male Binturong will be sent to Binghamton to keep her company before the end of the season.
The zoo is now open daily at 10 a.m. with the last ticket sold at 4 p.m. and the zoo closing at 5 p.m. The zoo is also taking registration for its summer camp for teens.
