Veterans Set to Move Into Binghamton’s New Tiny Home Community
Several military veterans are prepared to start living at a long-awaited residential development in Binghamton.
Offices for organizations at Broome County's new $12.2 million Veterans Resource Center on the North Side opened recently. The ten "tiny homes" located on the site are expected to be occupied soon.
The residential community at 530 State Street will consist of six one-bedroom residences and four two-bedroom units.
Matthew Strawn of Soldier On, a support organization, said veterans have been selected for the one-bedroom homes. One veteran with a child has been chosen for a two-bedroom residence. No one has been chosen for the three remaining larger units.
People interested in living at the site submitted applications for review over the summer.
Strawn said veterans still may apply to be considered for the two-bedroom homes or for openings that may become available for the one-bedroom units. The application may be found HERE.
Veterans who already have been chosen will be permitted to move in after the city issues a certificate of occupancy.
County Executive Jason Garnar said a state grant has been approved to support Soldier On's work at the site. He said the organization will receive $25,000 per unit annually to help pay for rent, case management, job training, transportation and other services.
