Binghamton police have released the name of a Johnson City resident who died shortly after being stabbed inside a North Side building.

Detectives announced Monday evening that the vicim was 31-year-old Malek J. Belcher, who also was known as Aleanna Belcher.

Police previously said a suspect was taken into custody shortly after the attack.

Officers were sent to 29 Virgil Street just after midnight Friday in response to a 911 call reporting someone "had been stabbed inside the housing facility."

Officers found Belcher had sustained "a significant stab wound to the abdomen" in a common stairwell inside the two-story building.

Belcher, who was transported to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City, died around 2:30 a.m. Friday.

Police said the suspect in the stabbing is 54-year-old Roy A. Peterson of Binghamton. He was found in an apartment in the building and taken into custody.

Peterson has been charged with second-degree murder. He was arraigned in Binghamton City Court and sent to Broome County Jail.

Investigators have released no additional information about the circumstances surrounding the fatal stabbing.
