The city of Binghamton's plan to gain control of a once-thriving retail complex appears to be moving forward on schedule.

New Jersey-based Galesi Realty Corporation lost its battle to retain ownership of the North Side property in an eminent domain fight with the city.

Mayor Jared Kraham Friday said the attorneys involved in the case continue to indicate the city should take possession of the parcels on West State Street in early March.

Kraham said it's "boots on the ground" for the environmental consulting firm the city hired to prepare for the eventual demolition of the existing plaza structures.

The mayor told WNBF News the city is "doing all the legal things that are necessary" with respect to the few businesses that continue to operate at the Binghamton Plaza.

New York Pizzeria, which has been a longtime plaza tenant, is expected to remain in its current spot for a few months after the city takes ownership of the property.

The owners of the popular restaurant are planning to move to an existing building at 71 Robinson Street when renovations at the new site are completed.

The fate of the Leather Corner Shoe Repair shop, which has operated at the Binghamton Plaza for almost 54 years, has not been determined.

A detailed demolition plan for the site is expected to be completed later this year.

The city is continuing to consider redevelopment options for the site.

To find out, Stacker consulted data from WalletHub, released June 17, 2020, that compares U.S. beach towns. Ratings are based on six categories: affordability, weather, safety, economy, education and health, and quality of life. The cities ranged in population from 10,000 to 150,000, but they had to have at least one local beach listed on TripAdvisor. Read the full methodology here. From those rankings, we selected the top 50. Readers who live in California and Florida will be unsurprised to learn that many of towns featured here are in one of those two states.
