In a letter to patrons, McCoy said he "made the difficult decision" to close the restaurant due to health reasons.

He wrote that it's "finally time to slow down and enjoy life with my friends and family."

McCoy expressed gratitude to those who worked at his restaurants in the Binghamton area.. He also thanked customers "for choosing to spend your time with me over the years."

McCoy started work for Guido Iacovelli at The Villa and Fountains restaurants in 1967. He said he learned a lot about the business during his time working for Iacovelli.

McCoy purchased the Number 5 restaurant on South Washington Street in Binghamton from Michael Turback in 1978, two years after it opened in an old city fire station.

In 2004, McCoy acquired Orlando's restaurant at the site of his current Chophouse in Endicott. He turned the place into Lampy's Mediterranean Grill.

Number 5 and Lampy's closed in May 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic. The Lampy's space was renovated and opened as McCoy's Chophouse in September 2020.

In the message announcing his decision to close the eatery, McCoy invited patrons to visit the place this Saturday "for a proper send-off, something we didn't get the chance to do with Number 5."

He said a photographer will be on hand "to capture what I know will be a room full of stories, laughter, and familiar faces."
