Binghamton Man in Critical Condition After Substation Incident
A man who was badly burned at a NYSEG substation in Binghamton remains hospitalized.
Authorities said 39-year-old Brent Fallon of Binghamton sustained second- and third-degree burns over much of his body in Monday afternoon's incident.
Fallon came into contact with energized equipment at the Ansco substation near Charles and West streets in the city's First Ward.
Police, firefighters and medics were sent to the scene around 2:45 p.m. Monday.
Emergency workers approached the spot inside the substation with extreme caution to avoid injury while they awaited NYSEG crews to make the area safe.
Fallon was burned when his clothing ignited when a surge of electricity passed through his body. He was transported to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City.
Fallon then was transferred to the burn unit at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse where he was listed in critical but stable condition.
Fallon, who is not a NYSEG employee, was not authorized to be inside the substation property.
Copper had previously been stolen from that site and other nearby locations in the neighborhood.
A NYSEG spokesperson did not respond to a call seeking comment on the incident.
