The City of Binghamton plans to place an advertisement March 6 asking for bids for the demolition of the old Magic City Ice building on Front Street.

Mayor Richard David says he’s looking forward to no longer having the “dilapidated eyesore” greeting everyone entering the city.

After the structure, just south of the Front Street Exit from Route 17 east, comes down, the City plans to embark on its $5 million Front Street Gateway Project involving full reconstruction of the street, new curbs, sidewalks, water and sewer upgrades and new period lighting.

The demolition of the ice house, which was built in 1924, is being paid through Federal Community Development Block Grant money and the work is expected to start in April.
