Last of Binghamton’s Original Parking Garages Almost Gone
Demolition crews have knocked down most of the old State Street parking ramp in downtown Binghamton.
The city-owned structure was closed early this year because of safety concerns. The 12-level garage opened in June 1970.

The city is paying Gorick Construction $2.5 million to remove the old garage and to fill in the site at the corner of State and Henry streets.
Work at the parking ramp began nearly three months ago. The demolition job is more complicated than two previous projects in which the Collier Street and Water Street garages were removed. That's because there were four underground parking levels in the State Street structure.

Mayor Jared Kraham has said crews will be busy at the old garage site for months after the main structure has been knocked down and the debris has been hauled away.
In discussing the garage demolition recently, the mayor noted the removal of the structure is revealing some "beautiful historic architecture" that previously was hidden by "an ugly urban renewal eyesore."

A surface parking lot is planned for the site after demolition crews have completed their work. The city then will seek redevelopment proposals for the property.
Plans for new projects had been sought for the site of the old Collier Street garage, which was demolished in 2016. That parcel - located across for City Hall - is still being used as a parking lot.
