House Where Binghamton Man Died in Fire Ordered Demolished
The city of Binghamton ordered the demolition of a house where a man was killed in a fire several months ago.
Police said 39-year-old Nathaniel Jenkins died in the January 15 blaze at 2 Pleasant Street on the North Side. Another man who had been in the house was treated for smoke inhalation.
Investigators did not publicly reveal what caused the morning fire in the two-family house but they ruled it "accidental."
Authorities said the building was supposed to be vacant at the time of the fire but it was known that people occasionally stayed inside the house.
Property records indicate the property is owned by Nildo and Josephine Giangan of Davenport, Florida.
Despite the heavy fire damage, police said people continued to enter the Pleasant Street building.
After several months, the city took action to address the hazards posed by the house.
According to Deputy Mayor Megan Heiman, the city ordered the structure be demolished "based on the extent of the fire damage."
Gorick Construction was hired to clear the property. Heiman wrote that the demolition contract "is between the City and Gorick, but the City will be filing a lien on the property for the cost of the work." The demolition had been scheduled for August 6.
