Binghamton Big Lots Store Closed – Sooner than Expected
One of the two Big Lots stores in Broome County has gone out of business. The other location is continuing to operate as usual, at least for now.
Employees at the Big Lots store in the Price Chopper Plaza on Binghamton's West Side had been told in late September that the operation would be closing.
The store near Main Street and Glenwood Avenue began winding down operations with plans to close its doors on December 8.
Merchandise in the store was discounted in a "going out of business" sale over the past couple of months. The fixtures, furniture and equipment in the store also were sold off.
Although the store was expected to shut down on Sunday, it actually was closed on Saturday afternoon because almost everything in the place had been sold.
About 10 people had been working at the Binghamton store in its final days. The store had operated at the site for 12 years. Before that, Big Lots had a Binghamton location on State Street.
Big Lots has been in the process of closing more than 300 stores across the United States in recent months. The Ohio-based company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in September.
The Big Lots store at Vestal's Four Corners remains open, although some workers and shoppers are concerned about its future.
When one employee in Vestal was asked whether the store would continue to operate, she said: "We hope so!"
