City Approves Drug Clinic for Binghamton First Ward Site
The Addiction Center of Broome County is moving forward with plans to open a Binghamton clinic for people with substance abuse disorder.
The agency's plan to develop the facility off Clinton Street in the city's First Ward had drawn opposition from some residents and operators of nearby businesses.
The project now has been approved by the Binghamton planning commission.
The Addiction Center acquired a three-story building at 15 Charles Street for $1.2 million in November 2022.
An outpatient clinic and rehabilitation program are to be located on the first floor. There would be 41 clinical offices, a dozen group therapy rooms and four medical exam rooms.
Plans call for 77 care manager offices on the building's second floor. There also would be a gym and a yoga facility.
The third floor - which now has five vacant apartments - won't be used by the agency right away.
The planning's commission approval of the project was contingent that certain security issues - including the installation of video cameras and a metal detector - be addressed.
The Addiction Center's administrative offices already have been moved to the Charles Street site.
The agency's Binghamton operations now are located on West State Street on the North Side. Officials want to consolidate programs at the Charles Street building.
Last year, the Addiction Center sought approval to open a 40-bed warming center at the First Ward site but that plan was killed due to neighborhood opposition.
