Three people were taken to the hospital after a BC Transit bus crashed into a light pole on the west side of the Oakdale Commons complex in Johnson City.

The incident happened shortly after 8:30 a.m. Friday near the former Burlington Coat Factory store.

The 38-seat bus apparently had been traveling northbound in the mall parking lot in a lane next to the building. The hybrid electric vehicle smashed into a pole approaching a curve.

Johnson City police were assisted at the scene by village firefighters and a BC Transit safety worker. Two Union Volunteer Emergency Squad ambulances were dispatched to evaluate those who were on the bus.

Police chief Brent Dodge said there were four passengers on the bus when it struck the pole. Three of them complained of pain and were transported to Wilson Medical Center for treatment.

Dodge said identified the bus driver as Wendy Carter. He said the cause of the crash appeared to be driver inattention or error. He said the investigation will include the review of video recordings of the incident.
