The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory from noon to 8 p.m September 5 or Broome, Tioga and Cortland Counties as well as areas in the Western Southern Tier.

Officials say the Heat Index values, or what it actually feels like, are expected to be from 95 to 100 in urban areas with mid 90`s elsewhere during the afternoon and early evening.

Heat related illness and dehydration likely unless necessary precautions are taken. Young children, the elderly, sick and residents in urban areas are most at risk. Outdoor pets are also at risk without appropriate shade and water.

A Heat Advisory means that a period of hot temperatures is expected. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

The National Weather Service says as a cold front moves through on Thursday, temperatures are expected to drop considerably with high temperatures over the weekend only in the 60s to possibly the lower 70s.
