Gannett's Central New York Production Facility started producing the Binghamton paper on June 26, 2006. Two weeks earlier - on June 12 - the plant began printing The Ithaca Journal. In July, the facility started to produce the Elmira Star-Gazette.

The $50 million printing site went into operation just as massive changes were occurring in the media world. The plant was fired up a few weeks before Twitter was officially launched.

In addition to printing the regional Gannett papers, the facility produces other publications. It prints the Utica Observer-Dispatch and two of its co-owned newspapers.

Newspaper circulation has declined in recent years as more people have turned to online information sources.

There have been some other changes over the past 10 years. The single-copy price of the Press & Sun-Bulletin was 50 cents in 2006; the price now is $1.50. The size of a page in the newspaper has been trimmed since the printing plant started operating; each page now is an inch narrower.

From the Binghamton Now archives, a video tour of the printing facility during an open house held shortly after the site opened.
