Every Year, the program provides a $500 scholarship to one student who majors in Criminal Justice or a similar program from each community college in New York State.

Charlie Baez-Rodriguez is clearly an excellent, hardworking Criminal Justice student with a bright future, and he’s certainly deserving of the Sheriff’s Institute Scholarship. I encouraged Charlie to sign up for the next round of civil service examinations because we need more dedicated, hardworking people serving in every aspect of law enforcement, and I hope we will see Charlie serving and protecting his community in uniform in the very near future. - Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar

He has been a full-time Criminal Justice major at SUNY Broome since Fall 2022, and his academics placed him on the President’s List with an overall GPA of 3.9.

According to the Broome County Sheriff's Office, Charlie Baez-Rodriguez was nominated by his professors at the SUNY Broome Criminal Justice & Emergency Services Department of SUNY Broome.

He plans to go into law enforcement upon graduating as a police officer or deputy with the Sheriff’s Office.

Charlie is just an overall great student and a great human being. In the 10 years I’ve been at SUNY Broome, I can honestly say that I have only had a handful of students of the academic caliber of Charlie. The faculty at SUNY Broome agree that Charlie is well suited for law enforcement and we look forward to seeing his continued success after he graduates - Leigh Martindale,  Associate Professor and SUNY Broome’s Criminal Justice and Emergency Services Department Chair
