A fire in northern Broome County damaged a mobile home and resulted in the death of a dog.

The blaze on Jackson Heights in the town of Barker was reported shortly after 7:30 a.m. Friday. The fire was discovered by a person who was checking on the home and three dogs inside.

The Chenango Fire Company was assisted by units from Choconut Center and Whitney Point.

Authorities say the small kitchen fire was quickly extinguished. The blaze caused smoke damage to the mobile home.

The residents were not home at the time of the fire.

Two dogs were taken from the scene to be treated for possible smoke inhalation. A third dog died.

Broome County fire investigator Jeffrey Winchell says the blaze was believed to have been caused by a problem with an electrical device.
