A $3 million project to improve tractor-trailer access to downtown Binghamton is expected to be completed next month.

Work at the intersection of Front and Clinton streets resumed late last week. The project to lower the roadway beneath railroad overpasses started last year.

New traffic signals, lighting and landscaping will be installed over the next few weeks. A final top coat of pavement also is to be applied.

The project included the replacement of water and sewer lines, along with the installation of new sidewalks.

City officials say state and federal grants are being used to cover the cost of the work.

In a statement, Mayor Richard David said the improvements will "provide critical access" for tractor-trailers which previously could not pass under the railroad overpass

Officials are urging drivers to slow down and obey construction signs as they pass through the work zone.
