Workers were directed to leave two Whitney Point School District buildings following a spill of a hazardous substance.

Whitney Point superintendent Patricia Follette said the incident happened around 9:15 a.m. Tuesday.

Follette said nitric acid for the high school chemistry lab was being delivered. She said the spill occurred when a box with four one-gallon containers fell off a cart.

The superintendent said some of the liquid nitric acid spilled on the floor outside a classroom. There were no students in the building and no injuries were reported.

Follette said the high school and the neighboring Caryl E. Adams Elementary School were evacuated as a precaution. She estimated about 20 office staff, custodians and construction workers left the buildings after the spill.

Firefighters from Whitney Point and other nearby departments were called to the scene. The Broome County Hazardous Materials Team and workers from the state Department of Environmental Conservation also responded.

Follette said the nitric acid was neutralized with baking soda. She said two workers from a Syracuse-based company were cleaning up the spill.

Employees were able to return to the district administrative offices shortly after 2:30 p.m.
