Demolition work on the former home of BAE Systems in Westover started in mid-February.

The 600,000-square-foot structure was damaged by flooding in September 2011. BAE Systems relocated its Broome County operations to Endicott after the disaster.

The facility at 600 Main Street is owned by the United States Air Force. The federal government is responsible for the demolition work at the 27-acre site.

Gorick Construction workers have been methodically taking down sections of the sprawling building that's known officially as "Air Force Plant 59."

When the demolition began, local officials said they expected the work would be completed in June. There's no official word on a new target date to finish the project.

Town of Union officials have said clearing the site could lead to new development in the Westover area.
