Watson Blvd. Traffic Detoured for IBM Country Club Bridge Removal

A section of a busy town of Union roadway was closed while demolition crews took down a rusting pedestrian bridge at the old IBM Country Club site.

The removal of the walkway over Watson Boulevard on Wednesday was one of the final major tasks in preparing the site for a redevelopment project.

LeChase and Conifer Realty are planning to construct a 75-unit apartment complex on the property, which is located just west of Johnson City.

Traffic was detoured around the former country club property starting at 9 a.m. The roadway was reopened around 12:45 p.m.

Gorick Construction crews removed the steel bridge and hauled sections off to a Weitsman metal recycling facility.

LeChase project superintendent Jon Cary said the walkway's weight was "conservatively estimated" to be between 5,000 and 6,000 pounds. He said the work went smoothly and the street was back in operation about 15 minutes ahead of schedule.

Demolition operations will continue at the site for a few more days. Cary said crews will complete their work by January 31.

Groundbreaking for the apartment project is planned for this spring, although no date has been announced.

The IBM Country Club facilities had been used by Endicott, Glendale and Owego company employees and their families for several decades before the company sold the property.
