VIDEO: Binghamton Foundry Demolition Nears Completion
Crews from a Vestal company are tearing down an abandoned foundry complex on Binghamton's East Side.
Broome County Executive Jason Garnar declared a public emergency about three weeks ago because of the condition of the property at 80 Frederick Street.
The former Phillips Foundry building had partially collapsed. The company moved its operations from Binghamton to a newly-constructed facility in 2002.
The county had taken possession of the property for back taxes. LCP Group acquired the site from the county with the understanding the company would demolish the old structure.
Garnar Wednesday said the demolition was "almost done." Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, said said once the 20,000-square-foot building has been removed "it won't be a danger to the community anymore."
The county executive said after the demolition, the site will be ready for future development by LCP Group.
