The Vestal Golden Bears defeated Wantagh out of Section 8 to win the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class A Baseball Championship at NYSEG Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Bears topped Wantagh 2-0 to give Vestal its first state baseball championship since 1996 and second overall.  Junior left-hander Dom Dirado allowed just three hits while Pat Porter drove in the eventual winning run and went 3 for 3 at the plate.

Dirado pitched very well in such a clutch situation.  He threw 81 pitches and told reporters after the win that he thought his curve-ball was a key in keeping opposing hitters off balance for much of the game.

Vestal got a shutout pitching  performance in the semifinal 7-0 win over Whitesboro on Friday.  Kyle Taborne went the distance to get the victory.  So over the 14 innings of baseball this weekend Vestal pitching yielded no runs.
