Unfilled Binghamton Assistant Police Chief Job May Be Eliminated

Binghamton Mayor Richard David says he hasn't decided whether to fill a top-level vacancy in the city police department.

One of the two assistant police chief positions opened up with the retirement last winter of William Yeager. The second assistant chief post is held by John Ryan.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, the mayor said he's been considering a range of options since Yeager retired. He said he may choose to leave the post vacant or he could move to eliminate the position and reallocate the money elsewhere in the police department.

David said he has been discussing the matter with police chief Joseph Zikuski.

City council last month approved the creation of a new position of director of police department community outreach and recruitment. The mayor is expected to appoint a retired city police investigator to fill the post.
