UHS Planning to Acquire Johnson City Church Property
Members of a Johnson City church have been told that United Health Services intends to buy the church's property.
Sarah Jane Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church at 308 Main Street has scheduled a moving sale for this weekend.
The historic church is located just east of the recently-opened Main Tower complex at Wilson Medical Center.
Church members last spring voted to sell the property that's been a fixture in downtown Johnson City for the past century.
The church social hall was completed in 1925 and the main building was dedicated in June 1927.
In recent years, the number of people participating in the church's Sunday service had declined. A spokesperson for the Upper New York Conference of the United Methodist Church said members voted "overwhelmingly" in favor of selling the property.
Church offices have been moved from Johnson City to Boulevard United Methodist Church on Binghamton's West Side.
Rev. Carolyn Stow could not be reached for comment on the transition process that's now underway.
A United Health Services spokesperson was unable to provide information Wednesday on plans for the church property.
The church owns a large parcel on Main Street and two smaller parking lots on Arch and Baldwin streets.
The moving sale will be held in the Sarah Jane Johnson church gym on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The announcement of the sale encourages people to "Take Home Some History."
The final service at the church is scheduled to be held January 18.
The church complex was constructed using money donated by Endicott Johnson Shoe Company founder George F. Johnson. The church was renamed in memory of his mother.
