The Rain Holds Off and Lets the Pros Play at En Joie
Doug Garwood holds a one-stroke lead over Michael Bradley and Marco Dawson after the opening round of the Dick's Sporting Goods Open at En Joie Golf Course in Endicott. Garwood notched nine birdies on his way to an eight-under par 64 which tied the best opening round score of his career.
Garwood has now played 10 rounds at the Dick's Sporting Goods Open and today's score of 64 is his best. Coming into this week's tournament Garwood is 36th in the Charles Schwab Cup standings.
Michael Bradley and Marco Dawson each shot seven under par rounds of 65. For Dawson it is his best opening round score since an eight under par 64 in the Mitsubishi Electric Championship.
Bradley reeled off five consecutive birdies to post his round of 65. That is the second lowest score of his career.
Clark Dennis and Woody Austin are both two shots off the pace after shooting six under par rounds of 66. Tom Gillis and Bob Estes are three strokes behind with rounds of 67. Estes came close to winning the B C Open in 1989 when he tied Horseheads native Mike Hulbert at the end of regulation. Hulbert defeated Estes' hope for the championship when he made par on the first playoff hole.
Second round play is scheduled to begin at 8:00 A.M on Saturday morning. News Radio 1290 begins live updates at 2:00 P.M.
