The Chris Thater Memorial Races are coming up in a few weeks and Broome County Stop DWI Coordinator Chris Marion is the guest on the August 6 edition of the weekly local public affairs program, Southern Tier Close Up.

The bicycle race began 33 years ago after avid cyclist, Chris Thater was killed by a drunk driver.

Marion talks about the history and evolution of the races over the decades and the effects of the return of the event to downtown Binghamton for businesses and for spreading the anti-drunk driving message behind the races.

Races are being held in Downtown Binghamton August 27 and 28 and events are taking place for both professional and amateur runners and cyclists.

Marion also talks about some adjustments to routes and procedures to improve safety and minimalize inconvenience to motorists downtown.

Information and registration forms can be found at the Stop DWI http://www.gobroomecounty.com/bcstopdwi/thaterebsite.
