Thanksgiving Community Dinner on Close Up
With Thanksgiving just around the corner, there's a flurry of activity in the halls of the Binghamton City School District High School in preparation for the annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner.
Speaking on the November 12 edition of the weekly, local public affairs program, Southern Tier Close Up, high school seniors Abigail Combs and Emma Scheneman talk about their involvement while faculty advisor Lawrence Kassan adds details about the planning, history and logistics of putting on the dinner.
The feast is for anyone who wants to come, regardless of income or other status but the three say often they see people who may not otherwise be able to have a Thanksgiving dinner.
The all-volunteer dinner will be served November 24 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Binghamton High School.
Again this year, there is no take-out but shuttle busses will be continuously running to get people to and from the dinner.
The yellow First Student Busses begin pickup at 11 a.m. at Franklin Elementary School on Conklin Avenue and Greater Binghamton Transportation Center on Chenango Street. Other stations begin runs at 11:15 a.m. at North Short Towers on Isbell Street and the First Ward Senior Center on Clinton Street.
The busses go to the high school until 1:30 p.m. with return trips from the school after that.
Anyone wanting to contribute can send checks payable to BHS THANKSGIVING DINNER, BHS Thanksgiving Dinner, 31 Main St., Binghamton, NY 13905 (Attn: BHS Honor Society).
Table sponsorships have also been made available this year. For more information, call Lawrence Kassan at 762-8201.
Southern Tier Close Up is heard Saturdays at 12:10 p.m. on News Radio 1290 WNBF.
