A woman was seriously hurt when she was stabbed and slashed during a street dispute near Binghamton High School.

The incident occurred a few minutes after noon Tuesday when a group of people walking west on Main Street became involved in an argument with others in the area.

A Binghamton man said his 26-year-old wife was "jumped" and assaulted by person armed with a knife. He said she initially was punched in the face. She then was slashed on the side of her head and a stabbed in the back.

The injured woman was taken to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City. Her condition was not available.

The woman was walking from the Broome County social services department office with three other adults and a two-year-old boy. The child, who was in a stroller at the time of the altercation, was not hurt.

The attack happened about a half block west of the high school, which was locked down after the incident as a precaution.

Shortly after the stabbing, a large motor home struck the side of an unmarked Binghamton police vehicle that was parked near the scene of the attack. No injuries were reported as a result of the crash.

Detectives placed several yellow evidence markers on between the Masonic Temple building and a Family Dollar store before taking photographs.

Main Street was closed between Oak and Murray streets for more than an hour while police processed the crime scene.
