Broome County is planning to temporarily take over processing of recyclables in the aftermath of the fire that destroyed a Taylor Garbage Service plant in Apalachin.

County Executive Jason Garnar has announced a plan for material collected in Broome recycling buckets to be delivered to the landfill in the town of Nanticoke.

The county legislature is scheduled to meet Thursday to approve the proposal. The new process is to be implemented on Monday.

Garnar said Taylor Garbage Service would not be able to move forward with plans to build a new recycling facility while handling materials trucked to the company's Apalachin site.

Since the January 3 blaze that tore through Taylor's town of Owego complex, municipalities have been hit with huge recycling fee increases.

Endicott Mayor Linda Jackson said the village now was paying $157 per ton. She said the cost prior to the fire had been $65 a ton.

Although Taylor Garbage Service has issued a statement indicating the fire-damaged plant will be demolished, work on tearing down the structure has yet to start.

Taylor Garbage Service officials have not been available for interviews since the blaze occurred.
