The occupants of a sport utility vehicle escaped serious injury in a freak crash at the Oakdale Mall in Johnson City.

A Ford Explorer overturned in a nearly-empty parking lot near the closed Sears store around 1:20 p.m. Sunday.

The man who had been driving the SUV appeared to have sustained minor lacerations to his head. The passengers in the vehicle apparently were shaken up but otherwise unhurt.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash. Authorities were investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, which occurred in the northwest area of the mall property.

The Johnson City firefighters spread absorbent material on the pavement because of a small gasoline spill.

A small group of stunned spectators gathered near the scene to watch emergency workers assist those who were in the vehicle.
