Susquehanna Valley Deals With Spike in Illness

Officials at the Susquehanna Valley School District have a long weekend with the national holiday to do extra cleaning at the district buildings as the schools have experienced an increase in illness over the past several days.

The January 17 basketball game against Seton Catholic Central had to be postponed as more than a third of high school students were absent from class that day.  

S.V. says building nurses are monitoring students who leave school during the day and those re-entering before they are allowed back in the student population. Disinfecting was planned for this past weekend in addition to the daily cleaning and prevention strategies.

Susquehanna Valley says it has been in contact with the Broome County Health Department and has posted flu prevention guidelines on the S.V. district website.

January 16, New York State Health officials said the state was seeing more cases of influenza so far this season than in recent years.

The state’s online flu tracker showed, as of January 4, over 10,000 laboratory-confirmed flu cases, up from about 3,000 in 2017.
