State Trooper Fatally Shoots Man After Overdose Call
A man died shortly after he was shot by a New York State Trooper who had responded to a report of a possible overdose.
Authorities say 24-year-old Tyler Johnson was pronounced dead at Rome Memorial Hospital.
According to state police in Oneida County, Trooper Robert Annarino was sent to a home on Golly Road in the town of Lee shortly after 7 p.m. Tuesday.
A preliminary investigation indicated Annarino was directed to a bedroom where he encountered a man face-down on a bed with his hand clenched under his chest.
Relatives told the trooper the man may have been suffering from a seizure. The man began to resist as Annarino and medics tried to turn him over. Police say Johnson had been concealing an eight-inch knife under his body.
Investigators say when Johnson did not comply with Annarino's orders to drop the knife, the trooper fired his gun. Johnson was struck several times.
An autopsy is to be performed by the Onondaga County Medical Examiner's Office.
