Four standout area student-athletes were awarded Tommy Mitchell Memorial Scholarships in ceremonies prior to Saturday's Binghamton Devils home game against Toronto.  The scholarships are given in memory of Tommy Mitchell, a youth hockey player, who was killed in a car crash on the way to a game in the Utica area.

Each scholarship is valued at $1500 and is open to student athletes who have actively competed in hockey in the area be it the Southern Tier Hockey Association or the Broome County High School Hockey Association.  The Tommy Mitchell Memorial Sholarships are funded through the Broome Sports Foundation with money raised through events like the group's annual Sports Memorabilia and Collectibles Auction held at Binghamton Devils home games.  A panel of Foundation members interviews candidates from applicants who apply for the scholarship aid each year.  The 2019 scholarship recipients include:

Luke Barney from Vestal

Chris Brewster from Chenango Forks

Tyler Leniek from Maine-Endwell

and Nate Zwieg from Postdam State
