
Summer Roadwork Ramps Up Across The Southern Tier
It's the unofficial beginning of summer. And with that, road construction work is ramping up throughout the Southern Tier of New York. Here's a list of some of the areas that are or will be experiencing road work. Road work schedules can change at any time. We are updating this as more road work is announced, so check back for updates.
Remember to slow down in road work/construction areas. Let's keep everyone safe - the road crew, other motorists, and of course you and your passengers.

Kirkwood
Rehabilitation of three county-owned bridges along County Route 20 in the Town of Kirkwood will require full bridge closures beginning June 1, 2026.
The three bridges to be rehabilitated are:
- CR 20 over Susquehanna River/ Norfolk Southern Railroad
- CR 20 over NYS&W Railroad
- CR 20 over Main Street (Kirkwood)The bridges will be completely closed to traffic from June 1, 2026, through September 1, 2026, with traffic detouring around the project area during that time. Single-lane closures will continue intermittently before and after the full closure period until construction is completed in fall 2026.
Binghamton
Continuing construction on Main Street, Binghamton.
Portions of Riverside Drive between the Memorial Street Bridge and Beethoven Street are closed to through traffic this week for milling. A detour is in place on Leroy Street. Traffic delays are anticipated, and motorists are encouraged to avoid the area.
Tuesday May 26 - Memorial Bridge will be reduced to one lane of traffic, and Riverside Drive between Front Street and Murray Street will be closed to through traffic.
Wednesday May 27 - Riverside Drive between Murray Street and Vermont Avenue will be closed to through traffic.
Thursday, May 28 - Riverside Drive between Vermont Avenue and Beethoven Street will be closed to through traffic.
The work and closure schedule is weather dependent. Crews will continue work on Riverside Drive the week of June 1, and paving will follow.
Vestal
Roadwork on Route 434, both directions, between Main Street and Front Street. Two alternate lanes of 4 lanes are blocked for bridge replacement over Choconut Creek. Westbound traffic is shifted to one eastbound lane, and eastbound traffic is reduced to one lane between Main and Front Streets. The detour for Town Hall Road is Front Street. This work is occurring now through October 31st between the hours of 7 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Broome County Highway Work for the Week of May 25, 2026
- Paving on (weather dependent):
- Reynolds Road - County Route 085 (from East Maine Road to Deyo Hill Road)
- Lower Stella Ireland Road - County Route 093 (from East Maine Road to the end of the road/cul de sac)
- Middle Stella Ireland Road - County Route 097 (from Lewis Road to Country Trail)
- Cutler Pond Road – County Route 075 to Lt. Van Winkle Drive - County Route 070
- Cleaning ditches on Rive Road (Chenango Bridge), Old Route 17 & Ballyhack Road
- Culvert work on East Maine Road, Oquaga Lake Road & East Windsor Road
- Mowing the right of way across county roadways
- Road sweeping crews will be in the Windsor & Deposit areas
- Striping county roadways with paint truck
Other Broome County Road Work
Roadwork on NY Route 17 eastbound between Exit 78 and Exit 79 with 1 alternate lane of 2 lanes blocked for deck and joint repair through May 29th between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. with overnight closure.
Roadwork on Interstate 81 in both directions between Exit 6 S-N - US 11; Ramp and Exit 7 - US 11 with 2 alternate lanes of 4 lanes blocked for pavement repairs & resurfacing with alternate lane closures between Exits 16 (old Exit 6) to 21(old Exit 7) and overnight lane closures through September 30th between 7 a.m. & 6 p.m.
Roadwork on County Route 69 - Airport Road in both directions at Exit 71 with 2 right lanes of 6 lanes blocked for bridge painting through June 15 between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Overnight lane closures that will be removed on Fridays; no lane closures on weekends.
Town of Owego
The New York State Department of Transportation will continue construction on the Interstate 86 corridor, continuing westbound from the work completed in Apalachin last year.
This project will begin with construction on the Exit 65 westbound off-ramp beginning May 27th. The ramp will be closed, and once the required work has been completed in that area, the Exit 65 westbound on-ramp will be closed for work in that area.
Upon completing the westbound construction, the process will be repeated at Exit 65 eastbound. During construction, detours will be posted at exits 64 and 66, providing travelers with direction and routes of travel.
