Police agencies responded to several vehicle crashes in the Twin Tiers as drivers began to employ winter driving skills that have rarely been needed in recent weeks.

The National Weather Service predicted total snow accumulations of about two inches by Wednesday morning.

Forecasters warned of brief snow squalls which could cause potentially hazardous travel conditions across the region.

Binghamton Mayor Richard David said city public works crews were prepared to deal with the snow.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, David said the city had plenty of road salt on hand.

The mayor noted the lack of snow and ice over the past couple of months has resulted in a big difference in salt usage compared to a year ago. He said about 560 tons of salt has been used so far this season compared to 2,500 tons by this point in the season in 2015.
