Workers on Wednesday morning successfully reattached the scale on the east side of the Lady Justice statue atop the courthouse dome. Gusty winds apparently caused the scale to fall into some bushes last May.

Harry Miller, the county deputy commissioner of public works for buildings and grounds, said the scale was back in place by about 7:30 a.m.

The crews started work early, hoping conditions would be calm enough to perform the delicate procedure. Miller said there was "no wind so they were able to get close to it" and complete the job.

A large crane was set up on Monday for repair work to the courthouse dome. Protective scaffolding was installed to allow access to the building's front entrance while the project was underway.

In addition to reattaching the relatively small and lightweight scale, workers replaced a few dozen damaged tiles around the base of the dome.

The cost of this week's work had not been compiled but the final total will exceed $25,000.
