Public Meeting Set in Binghamton for Main Street Safety Project

Binghamton residents and business owners will be able to learn about plans for improvements planned for Main Street between Johnson City and Front Street.

A public meeting on safety enhancements on the 1.7-mile section of roadway will be held Tuesday evening.

The city was awarded a $2.7 million federal grant to study the Main Street corridor, which is used by about 17,000 vehicles a day.

Binghamton officials say Main Street has a high pedestrian-vehicle crash rate, with an average of 12 crashes a year, including one that resulted in a death.

The goal of the project will be to reduce crashes involving vehicles, pedestrians and bicycles.

Intersection improvements and mid-block pedestrian crossings are planned as part of the work.

Those interested in the project may learn more during a meeting that will be held at Binghamton High School on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Design plans are to be finalized this summer and construction is scheduled to start next spring.
