Price Chopper Owner May Be Preparing to Sell Company
The upstate New York company that operates several Price Chopper supermarkets in Broome and Tioga counties reportedly is seeking a buyer.
According to Reuters, Northeast Grocery of Schenectady is exploring a sale of the business, which also operates Tops Friendly Markets.
Price Chopper has stores in Binghamton, Endicott, Chenango Bridge and Owego. Tops operated at a location in Owego until January 2022.
Citing people familiar with the matter, Reuters reported Northeast Grocery is working with the investment bank UBS to explore a sale.
A Price Chopper spokesperson told The Daily Gazette of Schenectady that the report of a possible sale was "pure speculation."
The company now operates nearly 300 stores in New York, Pennsylvania and four other states. The business was known as Central Market when it was established in 1932.
The company rebranded itself as "Price Chopper" in 1973. More than a decade ago, the process of renovating and renaming stores as "Market 32" got underway.
Price Chopper and Tops Friendly Markets merged in November 2021 to create Northeast Grocery.
Fitch Ratings has noted that Northeast Grocery is "somewhat vulnerable to strengthening competition" bigger national companies.
