Jury selection has started in the trial of a Binghamton man accused of killing his estranged wife and her friend.

40-year-old Aaron Powell faces murder charges in connection with the March 2013 deaths of Christina Powell and Mario Masciarelli.

Investigators have said Christina Powell appeared to have been strangled. Her body was discovered in the basement of the couple's home on Lisi Lane in the town of Binghamton.

Police said Masciarelli had been beaten with a blunt object. His body was found on the second floor of the house.

Aaron Powell was arrested a few days after the bodies were discovered. He was taken into custody in Susquehanna County.

Five jurors were chosen on Thursday for the Broome County court trial.
