Police Visibility Boosted in Downtown Binghamton

Binghamton police officers are making their presence known on downtown streets and in parking garages following a wave of larcenies and vandalism.

Higher-profile foot patrols on Court Street and on adjacent streets have been observed in recent days.

Police have augmented regular drive-through checks of the Water Street and State Street parking garages with officers walking through various levels of the ramps.

Four arrests have been reported in recent days as part of an effort to crack down on the "smash-and-grab" vehicle break-ins which had become prevalent.

New signs have been posted at entrances to the two city-owned garages warning against trespassing and advising that "violators will be prosecuted."

Despite the signs and the enhanced police presence downtown, reports continued to be received on Friday afternoon of people lurking in the garages, trying door handles in an effort to find unlocked vehicles.
